Why does European culture matter?

Pascal Prunet

Architect for the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris

Pascal Prunet is a French heritage architect best known for restoring some of France's most important historic monuments, particularly his role in the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris after the devastating 2019 fire. He is one of France's elite Architectes en Chef des Monuments Historiques (Chief Architects for Historic Monuments), a highly selective position responsible for nationally significant heritage sites. What are we really preserving when we restore centuries-old cathedrals and palaces? Why does Europe’s cultural heritage matter not only to Europe but also to the United States and other cultures? At the LŪŽIO TAŠKAS/TIPPING POINT conference, Prunet and Kristina Sabaliauskaitė, one of Lithuania’s most prominent contemporary writers, explore Europe and pose a fundamental question: can the old continent do more than preserve its history — can it also create the future?
