Along with the horrors of the war against Ukraine, we also have become witness of extreme efforts to destroy Ukrainian culture. This is a pattern followed by occupants at all times and in all places. Former ambassador to UNESCO and former Minister of Culture Arūnas Gelūnas is convinced that culture is a holding pillar of any statehood and part of national identity. When obvious signs and relicts of high culture had been destroyed, the false narrative of Lithuania as a small agrarian country was much easier to impose on Lithuanian people. Can we even imagine what treasures Vilnius could have had if not vandalized, robbed and burnt by Russian occupants?
