Christopher Columbus was not the first European, who discovered America. Vikings disembarked on the Northeast coast of America 500 years earlier than Columbus did. However, the Nordic tribe did not see the discovery of a new land as a stroke of fortune. We all know that Columbus bumped into Central America by accident too, while searching new trade routes to Asia. Columbus thought he disembarked in India and therefore America was never named after him. It was Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first to realise the discovery of a new continent. Spain and Portugal were the first to benefit from immense treasures accumulated by ancient civilisations and vast territories of the newly discovered continent. Brits, French and Dutch were a hundred year late, therefore they had to appease their colonial ambitions by turning wastelands of Central America into United States of America, as we know them now.
